George Brown Event - June 2010

The programme for the third annual George Brown Commemoration Weekend has been announced. It will be held on the weekend of 25/26th June 2010. THe programme is as follows:-
FRIDAY 25th JUNE
7.15pm Welcome and Wreath Laying
Meet at George Brown Memorial Plaque in St Colmcille’s Cemetery.
7.45pm St. Mary’s Church, Inistioge
Proceedings – Chaired by Seán Walsh, Secretary GBMC:
Topic – The Palestinian Question
Speakers:
- Michael Lanigan – President, Irish Medical Aid for Palestine
- Dr Hikmat Ajjuri, Palestinian Ambassador to Ireland
- Senator Dr David Norris
Amanda Richards, member GBMC, will preside over a ceremony, in song and poetry, celebrating the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.
10.00pm O’Donnell’s Lounge

SATURDAY 26th JUNE
11.00am – St Mary’s Church, Inistioge
Proceedings – Chaired by Joe Doyle, PRO GBMC:
Jimmy Kelly, Irish General Secretary UNITE will introduce Jack O'Connor, President SIPTU and the ICTU who will speak on the Legacy of George Brown, and Harry Owens, historian, who will deliver a lecture on the Aftermath of the Spanish Civil War in Spain.
1.00pm The International Brigade Memorial at the Olive Grove – Woodstock Gardens

2.00pm Tree Planting by Padraig O'Murchu (Chairperson GBMC)
4.00pm Return to Inistioge

Please note that there are still some copies the DVD "The Story of George Brown 1906-1937" available. This includes archival footage on the Spanish Civil War along with recordings of the 2008 celebration – lectures, unveiling of the plaque, tree planting in Woodstock, and social events. Please contact Terry who will forward a copy in return for a donation of €10.
